Cantaloupe melon is very common in Costa Rica and is often used in fruit salad and smoothies. Cantaloupe makes a very affordable breakfast, or snack at just $0.25 per cup. Cantaloupe is a great alternative to crackers or chips, which have more calories and fats.

Similar to watermelon, the cantaloupe has a tough exterior, which makes it a great beach snack too. Simply throw one in your bag, along with a knife. Cantaloupe is also great to take along to soccer games, a park, or pretty much any outdoor activity.

As a side, the bright orange color helps bring vibrancy to an otherwise bland plate. Because of its sweet taste, it complements a number of main courses, as well. And with the low cost, it adds a variety of nutrients and flair, while keeping the plate cost down.

Health benefits of Melon - Cantaloupe include:
1. Protects Eyesight - with the antioxidant zeaxanthin.
2. Decreases Blood Pressure and Promotes Heart Health- through the fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and choline content.
3. Protects Against Cancer - due to being rich in beta-carotene.
4. Promotes Healthy Digestive Tracts- as a result of being high in both fiber and moisture.
5. Increases Hydration - through its high water and electrolyte content.
6. Reduces Inflammation - because the choline helps to maintain cellular structure and membranes, aids in the transmission of nerve impulses, and assists in the absorption of fat.
8. Promotes Healthy Hair & Skin - due to Vitamins A producing sebum and Vitamin C building and maintaining collagen.
