Maracuyá - Passion Fruit

Maracuyá and Granadilla are two varieties of passion fruit commonly found throughout Costa Rica. Think of the difference between them like the difference between red and green apples—they belong to the same family but offer very different flavor profiles.
Sweet vs. SourThe Granadilla is usually the favorite for those who prefer a sweeter treat. It features a clear, translucent pulp and a sugary flavor. The Maracuyá, on the other hand, is much more tart and sour, especially the reddish-colored variety with bright yellow pulp.
How to Eat ThemEveryone has their own way of enjoying this exotic fruit! Nikki prefers the sour Maracuyá with a sprinkle of salt, while the rest of us reach for the sweeter Granadillas. While most people spit out the seeds (like you would with a watermelon), Nikki eats them for the extra nutrients.
Both versions work beautifully in smoothies—don’t worry about the seeds, as they blend right up with the pulp! Just remember that while the seeds are safe and beneficial to eat, the hard outer skin is not edible.
