Costa Rican Bananas: A Simple Snack
The bananas in Costa Rica are absolutely delicious! We personally prefer the smaller version (often called banano dátil), which are approximately four inches long, though the standard eight-inch variety is great too. Both varieties found here are significantly sweeter than any we have eaten in the United States. The small ones are especially sweet and perfect for smoothies, quick snacks, and desserts.
Yellow vs. Green BananasIn addition to the standard yellow bananas, Costa Rica offers green bananas (guineos). Unlike yellow bananas, green bananas are not meant to be eaten raw—they are hard and starchy. However, when cooked, they become a savory, tasty treat! They work perfectly as a side dish and can be prepared in the same manner as a plantain.
Along with being convenient and nutrient-dense, bananas are incredibly cheap. They are a "cut the crap" staple that won’t break your budget, whether you use them for pancakes, smoothies, or a quick energy boost.
