Black Beans with Thyme – Electric Pressure Cooker

Black beans are a non-negotiable staple in the Costa Rican diet. You’ll find them served as a side in traditional casados or on breakfast plates as a popular alternative to red beans. They are also frequently used in bean salads (often called pico de gallo in certain regions) and are the star of many signature dishes.
One of the most popular ways to enjoy them is mashed and refried. These creamy refried beans are the go-to dip for patacones (fried green plantains, also known as tostones).
Black beans are incredibly versatile. In a "cut the crap" kitchen, they can be used to make everything from hearty soups and savory sides to surprising treats like gluten-free brownies. Beyond their culinary flexibility, black beans are packed with essential vitamins and minerals that support your body’s natural functions. Because they are affordable, nutrient-dense, and delicious, black beans deserve a permanent spot in your pantry.
