Costa Rica Non Alcoholic Ice Drink

What is a Granizado?
Granizados remind me of the snow cones you find in the States, but these icy treats come with a delicious, creamy twist. They are served from colorful carts along the sandy beaches and busy streets of Central America, and they are one of our favorite ways to cool down while enjoying a beautiful Costa Rican sunset.
The ProcessIt’s a treat just watching the locals make them! They use a large block of ice and run a specialized metal shaver—which looks a bit like a giant cheese grater—up and down to create a perfect snow-like texture.
The "Sweet Twist"The shaved ice is packed into a cup and topped with flavored syrup (usually kola or cherry), but that’s just the beginning. What makes a Granizado truly "Tico" is the addition of Leche Pinito (powdered milk) and Leche Condensada (sweetened condensed milk).
The combination of the icy syrup with the creamy layers of milk creates a perfect, sweet, and refreshing treat. If you find yourself on the hot sandy beaches of Costa Rica, make sure to grab an ice-cold Granizado—it’s a local experience you don’t want to miss!
