Watermelon - Sandia

Composed of approximately 92% water, watermelon (sandía) is a powerhouse of hydration and a great source of Vitamins A, C, and B6. While it is available year-round throughout Central America, we especially love buying it from fruit stands and the back of local farmers' trucks parked along the roads on our way to the beach.
Watermelon is the perfect "cut the crap" snack for a day in the sun—it’s sturdy enough to be thrown in the car without getting smashed by your beach gear. It’s a quick and delicious way to refuel after an afternoon of surfing or a long day of snorkeling. While we usually carry a pocketknife to slice it, we’ve had to get creative a few times! When we’ve forgotten a knife, we’ve actually used shells and rocks to break them open.
Budget Tip: You will see the most local farmers with full trucks alongside the road from mid-February through May. This is the peak harvest time and the cheapest time of year to buy this refreshing fruit.
